Cuisine Helvetica’s Swiss Holiday Gift Guide 2021

Every year since 2016, I have been putting together an annual Swiss Holiday Gift Guide with about a dozen gifts ideas for people who love food. These can include cooking tools, wine subscriptions, Biberli, cookbooks and more from Switzerland. I hope that my suggestions will help you discover some uniquely Swiss gift ideas, all of which can purchased online.

1. Bratwurst ornament

For St. Galler Bratwurst fans, how about a special Christmas ornament in the shape of their favorite veal sausage? You will find it at the Lüchinger Galerie at Webergasse 26 in St. Gallen. Diehard fans will also want to pair it with St. Galler Bürli ornament.

2. Emmentalerli Red & White Checked Kitchen Towel

This year, I discovered the Markthalle Bärau in the Emmental region of Bern. Both a café and retail space, it has a large market with local foods and a bakery. You’ll also find a selection of gifts and household items. This market operates as a program of the Stiftung Lebensart, a foundation that serves people with disabilities. While I was there, I bought an Emmentalerli towel. It carries the “Lebensart” label, which means it’s made as part of the foundation’s effort to provide inclusive work opportunities for its clients.

3. New Swiss Cookbooks

There are so many wonderful new Swiss cookbooks that came out this fall. You may have already read my interview with the authors of Simplement Suisse (available in French and German). Also, authors of the popular cookbook, Swiss Fondue, have recently published their second book, Haute Raclette (available in French and German). Another ode to Swiss cheese, it has 52 recipes to help level up your raclette experience at home. Finally, my friend Andie Pilot has her third cookbook available this holiday season, this time focused on the wonderful world of Swiss Cookies (available in English and German). This classic cookbook has beautiful photos and reliably delicious recipes.

One of my favorite shops for kitchen tools in Zürich is Slow Goods. This little shop has a curated collection of handmade products. My favorite way to store all my homemade bread is in a cloth bag. The Swiss Design Market has some beautiful 100% linen food storage bags that can be used for bread, croissants or any other foods you need to store or pack along. These bags are made in Switzerland with European linen and recycled cotton cords. They would make a great gift for your bread-baking friends and family.

Its “De us Züri” gift box includes a Biberli from Leibacher Biber, a company I wrote about in my Swiss Bread book. In addition, you’ll find kirsch, honey, Tirggel and more. 8. White Porcelain Bowl

Matte on the outside and shiny on the inside, I bought this white porcelain bowl as a present to myself in 2021. It comes from the Swiss ceramic maker known as PUUL. 10. Round Wooden Cutting Board

For all your different types of Swiss cheese, Vachement Suisse has a lovely round cutting board made of beechwood. Its decoration is inspired by the désalpe, the fall tradition when farmers lead their cows down from their alpine pastures to lower ground for the winter season. The cutting board has a dimension of 28 cm (11 inches), and is available for shipping within Switzerland and internationally.
