Looking for an exceptional mountain restaurant in the Swiss Alps near Saas-Fee? Here’s my recommendation—the historic Berghotel Almagelleralp. You can reach this alpine hotel and restaurant on foot via the Höhenweg Almagelleralp (Almagell High-Altitude Trail). With tremendous views and local specialties from Valais, this is a must-visit restaurant during your time in this region.
This trail starts in the village of Saas Grund, which you can access by PostBus from Saas-Fee, for example. You can take a cable car up to the start of the hike. After walking about seven kilometers of the approximately 11-km route, you will reach this restaurant. I recommend stopping there for lunch or an afternoon snack. Or, perhaps you might even want to spend the night in one of their private rooms or dormitories.
Almagell High-Altitude Trail
If you are planning to hike the Almagell High-Altitude Trail, I recommend downloading the GPX file from Saastal Tourismus. You can then upload this file within the swisstopo-App. During your hike, this app will help you see where you are on the trail, and how much you have left.
When we hiked down, we avoided the portion of the trail described as the Allmagell Adventure Trail, with two suspension bridges. Instead, we opted for the less vertigo-provoking trail downhill to Saas-Almagell.
Valaisan Specialties
At Berghotel Almagelleralp, you can dine on local specialties, such as Walser soup and Raclette cheese with boiled potatoes. The restaurant also serves typical Swiss dishes, such as käseschnitten (open-faced grilled cheese sandwiches) and röstis (Swiss version of American hash browns). For dessert, I had a slice of their früchte-tarte (fruit tart) with apricots from Valais.

Built in 1910, the Berghotel Almagelleralp today remains open from about June to October. It sits at 2,200 meters above sea level, with impressive views of the Mischabel massif.
