September 7, 2017 — Zurich kicks off a huge food festival today for the second time, with over 100 events planned during the next 11 days. For FOOD ZURICH 2017, festival organizers selected events based on the following four criteria: Swiss cuisine, youth, innovation and sustainability. You will find events featuring traditional Swiss dishes, street food, fine dining, nose-to tail and much more.
The theme for this year’s festival? It’s Vörigs, a Swiss-German word used to describe “everything from surplus food, food waste, or food upcycling, and is all about finding further use for food and products which are usually thrown away when food is prepared or harvested,” according to the FOOD ZURICH website. As such, the festival’s City Dishes series has 50 restaurants that will prepare meals influenced by this theme on Saturday, September 9.
German is the language for nearly all of the workshops, but there are many opportunities to participate in dinners and markets where the language you speak isn’t important — the focus in on the food! For Anglophones, the following events will take place in English:
- The Franco-Swiss World of Sausage and Wine – September 7 from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m.
- Zurich Food Tour – September 8, 14, 15 and 16 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
- Vörigs Foreva – September 16 from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.
- Rediscover Rare Craft Beer Brews – September 13 from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.
The final weekend of FOOD ZURICH includes a special 2-day party, market and brunch at Zürcher Engrosmarkt from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 16 and 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 17.
