A unique project designed to promote local foods started this week in the Jura and Bernese Jura regions of Switzerland. Organized by the Fondation Rurale Interjurassienne, “Expérience Terroir,” has selected four families to participate in the project. Others can participate as well via social media, through a culinary exchange inspired by produits du terroir.
Here’s how it works… During a period of 7 months, starting in June and ending in December 2016, these four families will receive vouchers to purchase food from over 90 approved shops, restaurants and producers. You can follow their adventures via Facebook (in French), as they will be sharing recipes, advice and other information related to their experiences.
Expérience Terroir aims to increase awareness of regional foods from the Jura and Bernese Jura. Rather than shopping in large supermarkets or across the border in France or Germany, for example, the Fondation Rurale Interjurassienne hopes to encourage consumers to purchase from local producers or to eat in local restaurants (see “Nous travaillons avec nos produits,” April 15,2016).
Magali Ackermann, Conseillère Filière Alimentaire et Espace Rural at the foundation, wrote via email that she does not know of any other region in Switzerland that has developed a similar project, to the best of her knowledge. In my opinion, it seems like a great opportunity to find out about Swiss food products from the Jura that you may not have otherwise known about, and to get recommendations directly from people using these products. I look forward to following this project during the coming months and sharing what I learn!
